Congratulations! You’ve finally made that appointment you’ve been putting off for a long time. Perhaps you’re overdue for a check-up? Or maybe you’ve been referred for specialist treatment? Here is the Gum Gardener’s guide to help you get the most from your consultation.
Consultation? I don’t need a consultation, I just want my teeth cleaning.
Well, it’s important that we fully understand your needs and examine all aspects of your oral health, even if you’re not having any problems. We will also review your medical history as part of our assessment. We see your oral health is an important part of your overall general health. Please bring a list of any medication that you are currently taking, even if this might not seem relevant.
Really? What else should I bring?
Have you had any recent dental X-rays taken? If so, please bring these with you too. Or, even better, share the original image files before your appointment. If you have been referred by another dentist, they might have given you a referral letter to bring to your consultation.
You’ll also need your diary or access to your schedule to plan any follow-up visits. You might also want to bring a book or something to read in the reception area. Finally, please feel free to bring a friend or family member to accompany you.
Oh, do I need to bring my family too?
You’re welcome to invite someone with you if you wish, but there is no need to bring your entire family. Please make sure that you have suitable childcare arrangements in place so that young children aren’t left unsupervised, even if you’re not expecting to have treatment.
Where should I park?
That’s a great question. It’s a good idea to confirm the exact location of the clinic and parking arrangements before you set off. If you’re not sure where the clinic is located, be sure to allow plenty of time for your journey and try to arrive a few minutes early.
Why?
Well, you’ll need to register with the clinic reception before your consultation. We want you to get the most from your visit and this is much easier if you arrive on time. Please call the clinic if you expect to be late for some reason.
Don’t worry, I’ll be there.
You’d be surprised how many people don’t show up for their dental appointments. This is a waste of time and makes it more difficult to offer appointments for patients who really need treatment. Of course, we fully understand if there is a genuine emergency and you have to reschedule. However, we do appreciate as much notice as possible so that we can offer your appointment time to another patient.
Got it. Is there anything else I need to know?
We’ll do everything we can to properly assess your case before proceeding with any treatment. This usually involves some simple questions and, of course, a thorough examination of your teeth, mouth and gums. You might need X-rays, photos or other investigations as part of this process.
There could be some different options to discuss before you start treatment. You should receive a written treatment plan and estimate in advance. Please do ask any questions that you may have. This is your chance to get as much information as possible to improve your oral health.
